A blunt message from a veteran

I am just an ordinary veteran from the Second World War.

I, and lots of my friends, served at a time when Hitler had written his “Mein Kampf” and with a party of school kids we had stayed for a while in Trieste, at a place that also housed some Hitler jugend, and saw firsthand just how revered was this Hitler.

I served in the Far East in Burma, and was happy in the thought that we were all fighting for true democracy and the defeat of monsters like Hitler.

How can these politicians sleep at night knowing that people have fought and died for the right to live in a democracy?

As someone put it, a government for the people by the people — or so we always thought of it.

Instead, we now have a government in secret with no possible chance of being able to have any input into what happens. And what shenanigans they get up to in secret, behind closed doors.

Shame on you, and behalf of all the willing boys who lost their lives dreaming of a new life for their families and friends, I spit on all of you politicians who sit idly by on your cushioned backsides and applaud each other.

Bad luck to all of you.

Cyril Gorner

This veteran has said so well what most of us are thinking. I have not served in the military and have not come face to face with the enemy as this man has. But we all know when our freedom is being compromised. I did not vote for this, but I will remember on the next election day. Shame on all you politicians of the same strife. Senior Lady

I too wonder countless times about the callousness of two-bit polititians responsible for sending our men to far flung countries and curtailing freedoms at home. The bloody hypocrites are front and center at any national remembrance. Sickening from the git-go. A pox on the people who would vote them in again, they're no better.

WELL SAID, Cyril. Not for me, a US Citizen, to criticize Canada's government, but your words ring just as true, in my opinion, for my native Ireland and my adopted USA. Thank you for your service, and God bless you!

Cyril Gorner. So glad to read your words. We need more who witnessed tyrany to speak out against any loss of freedom. Veterans, I understand , usually avoid public discussion of political issues- but therefore by their silence, encourage those who would tighten the secrecy laws. And watch those who are promoting this secrecy- they will be front and foremost on July 1st to honour the sacrifice of those who lost their life, in what they say was a fight for freedom and democracy. Shame on them, I too say. You should be honoured for speaking up on this. This SECRECY ACT is the start of a slipery slope. You witnessed first hand how such things progress to the detriment of freedom.
