I was on my way to St. John’s on a beautiful Saturday morning when I came upon what I thought was a misplaced Canadarm hanging in midair — but this one was spraying something absolutely obnoxious to the nose and most likely to your health if you had stayed there long enough.
I quickly realized that traffic going west was stopped as the spray assailed the nostrils and throats of everyone in the immediate area. Pity those who had to sit, stare and wait.
Luckily, we were driving east and got out of there fast. It was obviously a kill spray but what was being killed: shrubs, insects, birds, tourism? No signs indicating what was being done.
Maybe it’s government’s new strategy for getting rid of moose legally. Have a snack, die on the spot. And we thought they weren’t doing anything.
However, not to worry. Since then, I have learned that Minister of Transportation and Works Tom Hedderson said that his people assured him that the spray was safe.
