On Friday night, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. the votes showed that, on VOCM’s “Question of the Day” — “Do you think the pending deal between OCI and government will be a good one for the province’s fishery?” — of 3,700 total votes, 65 per cent were “no,” 28 per cent were “yes” and seven per cent were “not sure.” Sunday morning at 9 a.m., the figures on this question were 6,500 total votes, 38 per cent “no,” 56 per cent “yes” and six per cent “not sure”!
Doing calculations with the later percentages on the 6,500 votes and subtracting similar calculations with the initial percentages on the initial 3,700 voters reveals that the 2,800 votes from Friday night to Sunday morning voted 93 per cent (2,604) “yes” and 2.3 per cent (65) “no.”
The process of this vote from Friday night to Sunday morning was biased and/or influenced by whom or whatever to give a poll result that the people of this province are in favour of giving our raw fish over to the use of foreigners and the wants of OCI and their like.
What group of people, and under whose direction, (our government’s? some districts MHAs? OCI’s?), caused the skewed flooding of this poll voting process?
If our government allows OCI to ship away the fish, it will be the opening of the gates for all other businesses to follow suit, and every single boat owner and fisher to demand to be able to do the same for maximum profit. Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization fleets and nations will be quick to follow up on this attitude of our province and move in and buy out control of all our fishing resources.
It would take a dimwit not to see that one end result of our government giving in to shipping out more unprocessed fish would be that more and more fishers and their boats and licences will disappear (not to mention the affect it would have on plant jobs), being sold and going to the control of fewer and fewer larger concerns and corporations. In effect, in others words, the destruction and end of the policy of fleet separation.
Well done, Darrin King and Kathy Dunderdale and all you MHAs from fishing districts who have not opened your mouths to stop this insanity.
By being silent on this decision, you are not only saying “yes” and “no,” at the same time to changing the fleet separation policy, you will be responsible for destroying the future fishing potential and rights of the people and children of this province.

this post is spot on. firstly, any poll that cannot be regulated to accept one vote from any given computer, the poll should be disallowed; however, because the polls supports something that I support (allowing OCI to ship away the fish), I will not say more on that. Secondly, this post is correct in that MHA's who are keeping their mouth shut are destroying the future fishing potential and rights of the people and children of this province. That said, it is fortunate for those politicians that destroying the fishery is EXACTLY what the majority of voters, myself included, are looking for in MHA's. Isn't democracy great!
