Fixing polls and failing fishermen

Mr. Phil Earle you are dead-on on your analysis of the polls and the wool that is being pulled over the electorate's eyes by the Government.

You are so right Sir on polls being fixed. If a poll cannot be regulated to accept one vote from any given computer, the poll should be disallowed. It is quite clear those in control of the fishery and want it gone for whatever the reason is responsible for this irregular voting result that if put to the electorate of the province would be that all the voters in the province would be on side of reviving the fishery, except for the big fishing corporations and the ruling government members. Also Mr. Earle you are dead on in your statement where you stated "Well done, Darrin King and Kathy Dunderdale and all your MHAs from fishing districts who have not opened your mouths to stop this insanity by being silent on this decision, you are not only saying “yes” and “no,” at the same time to changing the fleet separation policy, you will be responsible for destroying the future fishing potential and rights of the people and children of this province".

  this post is spot on. firstly, any poll that cannot be regulated to accept one vote from any given computer, the poll should be disallowed; however, because the polls supports something that I support (allowing OCI to ship away the fish), I will not say more on that. Secondly, this post is correct in that MHA's who are keeping their mouth shut are destroying the future fishing potential and rights of the people and children of this province. That said, it is fortunate for those politicians that destroying the fishery is EXACTLY what the majority of voters, myself included, are looking for in MHA's. Isn't democracy great!

Have you ever stopped to consider that 56% of the taxpayers and voters actually think the deal is good. I'll tell you right now, I an part of that 56%. Rather than drum up some conspiracy theory, why not accept the reality at the majority of Canadians do not care about the fishery? why not accept that the majority of Canadians want to allow foreigners to have access to the Canadian fishery because WE want access to their goods, services, resources and customers. Why not accept that the majority of voters are clearly readily willing to through the fishery under the bus because WE get nothing from its existence? The fishery in itself is a special interest group that benefits only a select few. Most have nothing to gain from the fishery, so naturally we then assess what giving the fishery to foreigners can bring us. And since we get nothing, getting something, anything, from giving a way the fishery is a good deal. As far as I am concerned, the fishery is a money sucking pit that puts a strain on the public purse. If we let the fishery dies, any monies directed towards it could be reallocated to health care, a service that ACTUALLY benefits everyone.

Have you ever stopped to consider that those who work M-F (year round) do not have time for such trivial matters during their work week, thus only allowing voting to happen on weekends.

  Well said Christopher. The fishermen who are home drawing EI are the ones voting NO. Then, the rest of the population who works M-F (and actually put in more to EI than they take out) get home and vote. It seems logically to me that this is in fact what happened. As a result, there results are valid. The OCI is a good deal for everyone except the fishermen. And since there are more of us than them, then democracy is working.

If you are looking to point a finger for the failure to represent the fishing industry on such matters, look no further than the FFAW whose executive spend their time attending meetings all over the world (like NAFO last month) and getting absolutely nothing done.

as citizens, the rights that we have change, because the rights often evolve with society. It is my opinion as a taxpayer and voter, and my desire as a citizen to see the Canadian fishery fail. It is my opinion that fishery jobs are bad jobs, and each and every Canadian should aspire to be more. So in that vein, I am honestly in favour of giving our raw fish over to the use of foreigners and the wants of OCI and their like. I say let them have the fishery jobs, let then moth ball our plants, let the buy our boats. They way I see it, if the fishery dies, any federal money that is spend on the fishery can be reallocated to promoting job growth in areas that Canadians actually want to work in. At this day and ask, so few actually aspire to be a fisherman. SO, if so few actually want this typr of career, why should be bother protecting it. In addition, my business depends on trading goods and services with foreigners. SO if giving away the fishery has a net benefit to Canada (or to me), then I am all for it.

It's a newspaper poll. It's always biased, not just on the weekends. Special interest groups are always working to twist these polls. Why would you think that this one would be any different. After all, nobody quotes poll results from a news media website.
