This is my response to David Duff’s letter to the editor, “Wangersky was wrong,” Sept. 29.
Mr. Duff, it’s unfortunate that you feel that you are the voice of all Canadians on abortion, as I myself do not share your views, and I’m sure many others don’t as well.
As a young female in our progressive society, I feel that my right to decide if I want to have a child or not is my own, as it should be for any woman.
There are many justifiable reasons for a woman to decide to have an abortion, such as rape, being financially unstable, the health of the child and/or the mother and simply not wanting a child, just to name a few.
I recognize that there are still many people who are pro-life, but it is very evident that there is a large community of those who are pro-choice. To criminalize abortion in Canada would be to take away the rights of many women who would otherwise have been able to choose the best decision for themselves.
Who are you, or anybody else who is pro-choice, to tell a woman that abortion isn't the right thing to do? Until you walk in their shoes, Mr. Duff, I ask you not to judge. If you are pro-life, then do not get an abortion; if you are pro-choice, then feel free to make your decision based on the circumstances in your life.
Women who chose to be pro-choice are not wrong because they feel it is their right and their decision to have an abortion; women who chose to be pro-life are also not wrong because they prefer have the child than to have an abortion.
So, as a plea for peace and calm between pro-choice and pro-life peoples, are we able to for once just accept that we have different opinions and views, and to mind our own personal business?
