Labrador needs a railway

I’ve written regarding starting a lobby to tunnel the Strait of Bell Isle and return the railway to Newfoundland and Labrador. The only bite I got, it seems, was when Ms. Yvonne Jones announced that the Iron Ore Company of Canada or the powers that be in Labrador City claimed to be surveying the cost of putting this rail across Labrador to the coast of Labrador.

To add a footnote to this idea would be to cut the Churchill Power to Quebec and let them do their worst. It’s really not theirs, as we all know.

I leave my name, address and phone numbers for supporters who would like to get in touch.

A pre-feasibility study done for the province in 2004 concluded that a tunnel across the Strait of Belle Isle would save Nalcor $400 million by not needing an undersea power cable. The whole thing could be built to carry people, goods and (upgradeable), reliable power for 1.7 billion in 2005 dollars. .......As late as 2011 Minister Hedderson said that government would proceed with a full fledged feasibility study. .... Where is it? ..... I guess Nalcor quashed that idea as it would show that Muskrat Falls is not needed. .......Overall, the province could have a REAL link between Labrador and the island and save BILLIONS on an unneeded, high cost Muskrat Falls project...... But that may not fit as well with the mining companies desire to get near-zero cost, island ratepayer paid for, highly subsidized Muskrat Falls power....... Who is government and Nalcor really looking out for? Muskrat Falls will benefit whom? See www.vision2041.com

A tunnel across the Straight of Belle Isle is a better public works project to undertake than Muskrat Falls. Our reliance upon a substandard ferry service has been crippling us for years. Regarding the idea of railroads, I'm afraid that train has left the station...

A tunnel? Sounds like a foolish engineer's dream. A railway across Labrador? That would be the more expensive route unless the province help pay for it. Cut the power and let them do their worst? Well, that would be a trip to the courts where the province would lose and have to fork out millions in damages and be forced to turn the power back on. Sounds like some reckless ideas for the public purse, you should be in politics.
