There may not be a real Santa Claus, but when it comes to Canada’s so-called justice system, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appears to be acting in that role for victims of serious crime. The gift Harper’s government will be giving is contained in a promise of new tougher rules on releasing those not found criminally responsible on account of a mental disorder.

On Wednesday past, cardiologist Guy Turcotte was released from a Montreal psychiatric facility after serving only 46 months for the stabbing deaths of his three-year-old daughter and five-year-old son. He stabbed them a total of 46 times. His ex-wife described the decision as “freeing a criminal.” Of course she is right — but that’s our justice system.

Heritage Minister James Moore, talking about the mother of the two dead children and the freeing of the killer, said, she “deserves better than this. The system failed her.”

So we all should be thankful Mr. Harper is trying to make sure such a travesty of justice doesn’t happen again.
