It seems to me we should be creative about the proposed harbour fence.
The harbour is beautiful, why can’t the fence be beautiful?
I propose we have an international competition for the fence as a beautiful monument (much like the Sydney Opera House) to which people all over the world will come to experience the harbour fence as an extraordinary solution to a difficult problem.
At all costs, we should avoid mediocrity in our thinking and in our actions.

Too late for a competition, or anything else for that matter. The consultant was already hired to design the fence before anybody knew about it. Funny, but I don't recall any tendering process to spend public funds. Just one other example of Doc wasting our money without due process. By the way, our taxes are increasing.
I don't recall anyone asking the moose of this province what they thought about that fence.....and we're no smarter than them.
James, the people of Trepassey are well known for their great sense of humour .... so I'm just going to assume that your letter was meant as a piece of satire, in which case you've done a great job. Personally, I don't walk the waterfront much anymore since I gave up hooking. But as an ordinary taxpaying homeowner, I do resent the way Dennis the Menace has been throwing our money around. If the well-heeled Port Authority wants a giant fence, and Council is not opposed to the uglification of the harbour front, then at least let them pay for it themselves.
James, you're missing the point. I don't actually mind the fence, the thing I mind is not being able to get on the other side of it. My family has always enjoyed summer strolls along the waterfront, and it is a big part of the experience to be able to go right along by the water and along by the boats that are docked there. I don't want to be barred out because of some irrational fear of terrorists. Furthermore, the Port Authority has admitted that a fence is just one option - they could simply hire additional port security officers, but they're trying to do it on the cheap.
