Newfoundland and Labrador , Adna

Hi. My name is Dalton Spencer and I am a sixth-grade student at Adna middle/high school in Adna, Wash. I recently chose Newfoundland and Labrador as the topic of an extensive geography report. I am the only student in my whole grade to choose your province!

For my report, I want to make sure that I represent you, the people and the province, fully and accurately. In that respect, I am asking for your help. I want to hear from you! I want to know what makes Newfoundland and Labrador different. What are your favourite places to visit, favourite things to do, interesting quirks that are yours and yours alone?

I would appreciate it if you would consider mailing me something you love, whether it's a feather from your favourite bird, a twig from your favourite tree or just a friendly letter. Let your imagination guide you. Please share your love of Newfoundland and Labrador with me and all the sixth-grade students here at Adna.

I thank you in advance for your involvement in my project and for encouraging my education.

Please mail any correspondence to me at:

Dalton, just go when you can. Don't wait till you're 60 like we did. There's so much more to see without the car but you are right about the friendly people, none more so than these folk. We saw whales , icebergs, moose, puffins historical sites etc.etc. Enjoy

Hi Dalton: It gives me great pleasure to take the time to write to you personally, and to congratulate you on your interest in pursuing your Education. You appear to be a good student, who is on the road to success and you are well aware of how to succeed. If you ask a question, someone is always there to help you. This time, I want to help you with your chosen topic. I applaud you for your interest in learning more about other countries and particularly, your choice - Canada's 10th. province - the province of Newfoundland. I was born in Newfoundland lived there till I had graduated from College and then I moved to Ontario to work and raise my family. I am still living in Ontario, but my 'home' will always be NL. That is something that is rather difficult to explain. It's suffice to say that it's about the hospitality that is inherent into these people, their inner strength and diversity, the beautiful sights, places, culture, food, music, arts & crafts, storytelling, history, humour, memories, and most important the love they share for each other. In the most difficult times, or situations, these folks are always ready to collectively gather to help those in dire need. When I was attending school, probably around your age - my golden dream was to become a writer. Despite all the difficulties of growing up poor, even when one of my parents became seriously ill and could no longer provide for our family, I held on tighter to my dream. I still had my future in front of me. That dream was realized and came to fruition when I became an Author aftr I retired in 2009. The title of my book is "R.E.A.L." from the Edge of The Rock. This is my autobiography of growing up in a small town in NL in 1940-60. I take my readers on a journey through my past that will give a transparent view of the difficulties that we encountered, and how we were able to overcome all adversities that we were confronted with. My book is available at all Indigo Chapter stores, Coles, and independent book stores. It is also available at school, colleges and universities across Canada. I am sending you an autographed copy of my book that, if you wish, you may give to your school with my compliments. Also, I am sending along some old photos of some of the tools, equipment, etc., that we used when I was growing up. I will also send you some recent photos of places/things of interest in NL. If you need any further information, or help with your project, please email me at: bachnoel@bell.net Good luck with your project and my best wishes for your future success! Rita M.
