The 2013 municipal elections are quickly approaching. As a former minister of municipal affairs for Newfoundland and Labrador and a former mayor of Mount Pearl, I encourage each and every citizen throughout the province to consider putting their name forward as a candidate for this extremely important level of government.
Municipal council is an essential aspect of our communities and contributes significantly to the running of our province. The greatest contribution you could make to your hometown and province is taking on a leadership role with your town or city. Your participation will make things better today and for future generations to come. Municipal representatives work closely with the residents and all other levels of government to ensure we all continue to have a province that provides a safe and secure environment for us to live, work and raise a family.
Newfoundland and Labrador is undoubtedly one of the best provinces in the country in many respects. This can be attributed to our commitment, our dedication, our sincerity and our keen desire as a people to protect this great place.
Being part of the movement that secures our future is a wonderful opportunity that thousands have undertaken over the years. I encourage many more to experience the same satisfaction by serving on your local government.
Municipal politics is all about capacity building and strengthening a community. From experience, I can confidently say that while the job is not easy, the satisfaction one receives is incomparable.
As a municipal councillor, mayor or deputy mayor, you have the ability to effect more change in a short period of time than most have in their entire lives. I cannot express how important it is that people step forward and support their fellow residents and their community.
This September put your name on a ballot. Put your ideas out there. Be the positive change your community needs. Run for municipal government.
