Governing party just lost my vote

I am writing to express my utmost disappointment with this Progressive Conservative government with regard to the news that has been recently announced regarding cuts to the provincial pension plan.

I voted, as did many others, for this PC government because we believed in Kathy Dunderdale as our premier, and other members of her party. This was a mistake.

I am disgusted with the idea of any changes being made to our pension. I have worked in health care for 35 years in a very challenging job, both physically and mentally. I have less than five years to work toward what I thought would be a reasonable pension, knowing that there are others who worked 25 years or, even worse, eight years who are receiving a “substantial” pension.

The news that this government is even considering making changes to the pension plan at this point in my career is highly offensive and an insult to all devoted government employes.

It drastically changes my plans for

the future and does not allow me

the time I need to plan for my retirement. Therefore, I will not be voting Progressive Conservative in the next election.

Viola Finn

Sarcastic Sam, Corporate Psycho...at least Maggy shared her thoughts, more than you two flakes did! Why don't you both share your stories about how you were sent down a stream in a canoe without a paddle, or indeed, were promoted to CEO levels! Let your readers have more than 1 and 2 lines. You both sound like two aching losers.

I sympathize with Ms. Finn but I also agree with Sam that Newfoundlanders are now paying dearly for a lack of vigilance over their own government's increasingly arrogant, inept and anti-democratic behaviour. It's fair to say that the Dunderdale government has been - right from inception - almost exclusively about one project. Muskrat Fall not only drained the finances and intellectual energy of this administration, but sparked a deliberate dismantling of the checks and balances constructed over many decades to keep governments honest and accountable. An enormously flawed, badly timed, high risk public investment would not surprisingly need legislative protections, including a very repressive secrecy act, and a pitched battle with its detractors. A few people - mostly retired bureaucrats and politicians, environmentalists and academics, along with some ordinary citizens expressed their outrage as much with the process as the outcome. But polls showed that a large number of Newfoundlanders either supported it or were indifferent to the issue. Particularly disappointing was that none of the public sector unions objected to the direction their employer was taking - at least not until it became clear that some part of Muskrat's financial burden would fall on their shoulders. Only when it began to hurt them personally, financially, were they moved to speak out. Indeed pension cutbacks might take a back seat to soaring utility bills and Muskrat-driven tax hikes and service cuts as people like Ms. Finn move into retirement. People are now beginning to understand just how fragile our newfound 'have' status really is, how vulnerable we are to a downturn in oil and commodity prices, and how foolish we were not to squirrel away a bit more of our oil and gas windfall when we had the chance.

That's what you get for voting for them last time. Serves you right. Probably voted for Danny to.

In all fairness, how the hell were we to know "openness and accountability" was just a buzz phrase to get elected, only to be made fools of by greedy and unscroupulous Newfoundlanders. Our polititians can challenge Quebecers any day.

So, after all the lies, deceit, cuts, and secretiveness you NOW decide to turn your back on this government because… NOW it affects you directly. Wow! Clap…clap…clap.
