Ovations was worth the effort

As chair of the organizing committee for Ovations, I’m writing in response to two recent letters to the editor from Marvin Barnes and Dr. Penny Allderdice regarding the Ovations event.

Let me begin by reiterating that Ovations was funded completely through the generosity of numerous business and industry donations.

Many of these corporations also support and donate to educational programs and institutions, transition houses, child care centres and community organizations across the province.

The support for Ovations was due to the hard work of committee members and a sincere desire on the part of the private sector to partner on an initiative that would subsidize the participation of women from across the province to focus on women’s leadership and applaud the accomplishments of women in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Throughout our province, women work tirelessly on behalf of their communities — most go unrecognized for their dedicated efforts.

Ovations was intended as an opportunity to bring women together and recognize those efforts.

Was the event worthwhile? Yes!

Hundreds of people learned about women’s historical achievements in our province.

It was an important recognition and celebration of work being done today.

Women continue to tell us how empowering it was to hear the stories of women leaders in business and community.

Many told us of how inspired they were to become more involved.

Bringing together women from all walks of life across our province to celebrate our shared experiences, accomplishments and challenges was and continues to be critical as we work together for a more equal, just and fair future.

Check out the website. http://www.ovationsnl.ca/. 1. “Newfoundland and Labrador’s outstanding women, presented by Premier Kathy Dunderdale”, 2.“Celebration of Women Evening presented by Premier Kathy Dunderdale”, 3.“Message from the Premier” and 4.“Premier’s Keynote Address”. And that’s just on the first page of the website! If that wasn't a political event featuring the premier, Ms. Ross, then what is?

I sincerely believe you shouldn't have to reward people for volunteering, the money would be better spent somewhere else. For example, school lunch program or SPCA, I know these organizations get support but $225,000 is alot of money to be spent wining and dining volunteers.

Linda, If you organized this wonderful conference without any government involvement, why did you then turn it over to government so they could turn it into a PR exercise for the premier and her cabinet ministers?
