On Pitts Memorial Drive, near SouthSide Road in St. John’s Thursday, May 29, 2019, a duck was crossing the west-bound lane around 4:30 p.m. when a woman driving the lead vehicle in a line of traffic slammed on her brakes to avoid the duck. Four vehicles behind her were involved in a chain-reaction collision. There were no serious injuries. After attending accident, RNC officers discovered the duck was trying to reach six ducklings that had gotten into the drain at the side of the highway. RNC Const. Devon Thompson crawled into the drain to retrieve the ducklings with the aid of Const. Mike Hollett. Two employees from the City of St. John’s humane services put the ducklings into a carrier and were released later at Bowring Park, where it is believed they originated. The mother duck flew off when the ducklings were corralled. — Photos by Joe Gibbons/The Telegram
