The Royal Canadian Legion Dr. William Collingwood Memorial Branch 33 Placentia commemorated the 65th Anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy on Sunday, June 7 with a parade and candlelight service of remembrance. Members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and 2558 Placentia Army Cadets led the parade to the Sacred Heart Cenotaph.

Representatives from all levels of government participated in the candlelight service of remembrance to commemorate D-Day. To honour the memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the quest for peace and freedom, Placentia residents Barbara Patterson and Lucy Counsel place their candles at the base of the Sacred Heart Cenotaph during the candlelight service of remembrance held on June 7, 2009.

Rev. Marion Randell shared a gospel hymn as those gathered at the service of remembrance placed their candles around the base of the Sacred Heart Cenotaph in a touching tribute to all men and women who have given their lives to secure peace and freedom.

The Fatima Academy Accordion Group were on hand at the Royal Canadian Legion to provide entertainment for the Kitchen Party following the service of remembrance.
