Marine environmental student and photographer Stephen Sheppard gave a presentation at the Marine Institute in St. John’s Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, on his voyage with Students on Ice: Arctic Youth Expedition 2012. Sheppard captured the Arctic through his lens during the 14-day ship and land-based journey through the Eastern Canadian Arctic and Western Greenland. The Marine Institute sponsored Sheppard on the expedition as one of the leaders/chaperones to 80 international high school students, 14 to 18 years old. Eight high school students from Newfoundland and Labrador were among the participants. According to its website, Students on Ice is an award-winning organization offering unique educational expeditions to the Antarctic and the Arctic. Its mandate is to provide students, educators and scientists from around the world with inspiring educational opportunities at the ends of the Earth and, in doing so, help them foster a new understanding and respect for the planet.
