Many four-legged friends and their owners made their way to the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in downtown St. John’s Saturday afternoon, Oct. 5, 2013, for the annual St. Francis blessing of the animals service. The event is held on the Saturday closest to the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and all living things, which occurs on Oct. 4. The annual blessing was started in St. John's in 1997 by Esther Buckley at St. Pius X Church. After a couple of years it moved to the Anglican cathedral, where it has been held to the present day. This year more than 150 pet owners and their beloved animals attended the ceremony, at which each creature was blessed individually by clergy. Among the animals present at the blessing were a variety of dogs and cats, along with some less common pets, such as a bearded dragon, a hedgehog, dwarf frogs. — Photos by Rhonda Hayward/The Telegram
