Parsons leads Vikings past Knights

Matt Parsons had three hits in four trips to the plate to lead the Gonzaga Vikings to a 5-2 win over the 3Cheers Pub Knights  in St. John’s Molson senior baseball at Smallwood diamond Tuesday night.

Winner pitcher Dick Collins (7H, 2W, 5K) and the Knights’  Andrew Mercer (10H, 3W, 1K), each had complete games.

Mercer had two hits at the plate.

Storm 4, Holy Cross 3

Mike Dyke had three hits, two of them double,s as the H.J. Bartlett Electric Storm collected its second straight come-from-behind win over Holy Cross Trinity Pub Tuesday night at St. Pat’s Ball Park.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Storm scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, tied the game in the sixth and won it in the bottom of the extra inning. The Storm bested the Crusaders 5-3 Monday with a seventh-inning, two-out five-run comeback.

Peter Fifield (5H, 4W, 6K) went the distance in pitching Tuesday’s win.

Justin Crawley (1IP, 1R, 2H, 1W, 1K), in relief of starter Matthew Smith (6.2 IP, 3R, 6H, 5W, 6K), took the loss.

St. john’s intermediate baseball

Raiders hand Guards’ Delaney first loss of the season

Mike Piercey (7IP, 1R, 3H, 4W) struck out 11 and teammate Mark Burton doubled and tripled as the Raiders downed the Guards 3-1 in Molson St. John’s intermediate baseball at St. Pat’s Ball Park Tuesday.

Mike Delaney (6IP, 3R, 7H, 3W, 3K) took the loss, his first of the season in eight starts.

Greg Delacey had two hits for the losers.

Gonzaga 11, Knights 7

The Vikings scored four first-inning runs off Knights’ starter Joey Connors (4R, 3H, 1W, 0K), who didn’t record an out, and never looked back in a rout of the 3Cheers Pub Knights at the Smallwood diamond.

Scott Hynes (7IP, 7R, 11H, 0W, 6K) pitched the win for Gonzaga, which was sparked by Tom Hayward bases-loaded three-run triple in the opening inning. Fred Mills collected three singles.

Ryan Lane (2IP, 2R, 0H, 5W, 1K), Danny Connors (1IP, 3R, 2H, 2W, 1K), Andrew Mercer (1IP, 1R, 3H, 0W, 1K) and Jordan Brown (3IP, 1R, 1H, 3W, 1K) pitched in relief for the Knights.

Steve Barrett had three doubles and an RBI in a losing cause.

St. john’s ladies softball

Pouch Cove sweep Angels, advance to final

Pouch Cove Pharmacy advanced to the championship series of the Coors Light St. John’s Women’s Softball League with a 10-0 win and series sweep over Angels Tuesday night at Wyatt Park.

Stef Walsh (5IP, 3H, 3K, 1W) pitched the win over Stephanie Pomeroy (4IP, 10R, 13H, 1W).

Top Pouch Cove Pharmacy batters were Michelle Rideout and Meaghan Dalton who both went 2-3, with a double, triple and two runs scored.

For Angels, Ashley Dunphy, Kendall Carmichael and Jessica Todhunter each had singles.

The other semifinal between Impact Signs and Placentia resumes Thursday at 5:45 at Wyatt Park.

POWERLIFTING

Local junior and sub-junior lifters medal at worlds

Two of the four local powerlifters competing at last week’s World Junior/Sub-Junior Powerlifting Championships in Pilsen, Czech Republic came home with medals around their neck and a host of new national and provincial records.

Justin Miller, 20, competing in the 75-kilogram class, won three medals. He took silver with a 202.5kg bench press, bronze for a 290kg squat, and an overall bronze for a combined three-lift total of 752kg. Miller’s squat broke a 19-year-old national record, and he also set a pair of nationals records and eight new provincial marks.

Sub-junior 60kg lifter Steven Price won bronze in the squat (210kg) and another in the deadlift (212.5kg). The 18-year-old finished fourth overall and set two Canadian records and six provincial records.

Price’s sister Stacey, lifting in the 90kg class, didn’t meda,l but set eight new provincial records. The fourth lifter, Corner Brook’s Ryan Rowsell, competed in the 82.5kg class, but failed to produce a medal.

The team was coached by Tom Kean.
