Jeremy Colliton’s deflection past goaltender Peter Mannino at 2:44 of overtime lifted the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to a 4-3 American Hockey League win over the St. John’s IceCaps Friday.

The loss was the IceCaps’ second in three home games on the young season.

Before a full house of 6,247 at Mile One Centre, the Sound Tigers – farm team of the New York Islanders – forced OT with a late goal when David Ullstrom cashed in on a play with Colliton and Chris Langkow with only 2:50 left in regulation time.

That goal came just after Mannino, making his second straight start for St. John’s, foiled Tomas Marcinko on a breakaway as the IceCaps clung to a 3-2 lead.

Justin DeBenedetto paced the Sound Tigers attack with two goals.

Scoring for St. John’s were Jason King, Jason Gregoire and Riley Holzapfel.

The teams traded goals in the first period, making it a 2-2 game after 20 minutes. Following a scoreless second period, Holzapfel gave the home crowd something to cheer about, finishing off a two-on-none play with Spencer Machacek only 49 seconds into the third.

St. John’s appeared poised to extend its record to 4-1, especially after the Macinko breakaway stop, but the Sound Tigers had other ideas, evening their record to 3-3 on the season.

The two teams go at it again 7:30 tonight at Mile One.

The St. John’s IceCaps unveiled their mascot during the first-period intermission Friday, and it’s a familiar beak. Buddy the Puffin hit the Mile One ice to a huge ovation … The Sound Tigers’ Sean Backman is the son of former New York Rangers forward Mike Backman of Halifax. The elder Backman is a boyhood friend of IceCaps’ broadcaster Brian Rogers … Two Sound Tigers — Calvin de Hann and Casey Cizikas – played on the Canadian entry in the 2011 world junior championship in Buffalo … The Bridgeport coach is Brent Thompson, who is familiar with St. John’s, having visited here on many occasions during his nine years as an AHL player ...
