Mount Pearl Electronic Centre/Molson coach Jim Hamlyn says his team has improved in several areas and looks to be more competitive this season in the Breen’s Jubilee Trophy Women’s Soccer League, but the team faces tough opposition in 2012.

“We’ve gotten younger, quicker and improved our depth,” said Hamlyn.

“We’re still a work in progress with some terrific young talent coming from our 16-18 (years) program in the near future.”

Mount Pearl finished fourth last season with a 4-15-2 record, but Hamlyn believes there can be an improvement on that in 2012.

The core of his team returns, while Mount Pearl has added some youth. He said under-18 players such as Megan Earle, Jenny Tiller, Hannah Noseworthy, Courtney Sharron, Darci Tucker, Emily Wiscombe and Emily Wells look promising.

He noted under-16s such as Teri Murphy, Emily Bailey and Keisha Younge are  other players, “we hope to bring into our senior side during this season to further their development.

“So our future looks bright.”

The team is led by Tracey Dyer, who finished fourth in league scoring with eight goals.

Holy Cross Kirby Group, which opened the season with a 2-0 win over Feildians Ernst & Young Monday, is expected to set the pace again this season after posting a remarkable 20-0-1 record in 2011. Feildians finished runner-up with a 12-3-6 record and fell 1-0 to Holy Cross in the final, so it is likely that rivalry will continue this summer.

The other teams in the league are minor clubs — St. John’s Hyundai U-16 and U18 teams along with Mount Pearl U18 and U16 —and not eligible for the league crown.

Here’s a look at the senior teams:

HOLY CROSS KIRBY GROUP

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 20-1-0 (first place, championship)

COACH: Dragan Mirkovic

WHO’S BACK: Jenna Munden, Rebecca Greene, Maria Oliver, Leslie Pope, Laurianne Sutton, Kaelyn Burke, Julie Woolridge, Ashley Dawe, Meghan Wall, Janine Bursey, Malorie Harris, Erika Lannon, Leighanne Tobin, Jennifer Burry,  Kiley Snow.

WHO’S GONE: Nichole Adams, Maris Miller, Heather Williams, Nicole Jesso.

NEWCOMERS: Shauna Gilpin, Alexe Morgan, Alison Philpott, Hannah Rivkin.

NOTES: The team may have the services of star player Laura Breen before the summer’s over. Breen, who hasn’t played in two years due to injury problems, has started training and is hoping to be back in six to eight weeks. Harris led the league in scoring with 19 goals last year, four more than teammate Lannon.

OUTLOOK: Should finish first and repeat as champions. Could be untouchable if Breen regains her form.

FEILDIANS ERNST & YOUNG

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 12-6-3

COACH: Jamie Roche

WHO’S BACK: Among returning players are Leslie Bradshaw, Liz McPhail, Susan Breen, Nicola Facey, Kathy Hurley and Hilary Hutton.

WHO’S GONE: According to coach Roche, Nicki Bailey (Locke) and Jennifer Murphy are taking the season off because of pregnancy.

NEWCOMERS: Nichole Adams, Dimitra Kufudi, Maxine Morris, Chrissy Hickey, Renee Jerrett.

NOTE: McPhail led team in scoring last season with nine goals, good enough for third place.

OUTLOOK: Must find a way to penetrate Holy Cross defence and find the back of the net which is something they had little success with last season. Have something to prove and could do it in the final, but it would be an upset.
