UPDATE: Newfoundland-born wrestler makes Olympic appearance

Newfoundland-born wrestler Leah Callahan made her first Olympic appearance today, losing to Burmaa Ochirbat of Mongolia.

Callahan lost with a score of 0-3 in the freestyle 1/8 finals match in the 72 kg category.

The St. John’s-born freestyle wrestler was considered a dark horse medal contender going into the games.

The loss means Callahan is out of the tournament. Had Ochirbat made it to the gold medal round, Callahan would have competed for a bronze medal.

Now living in Calgary, Callahan left Newfoundland at the age of three when her parents moved to Western Canada.

The Canadian Olympic women’s soccer team has won a bronze medal, after defeating France.

The bronze medal also has a Newfoundland connection.

Lauren Sesselmann’s father was born in Stephenville, allowing the Wisconsin woman to get dual citizenship before being selected for the Canadian women’s soccer team.

Yeah that's a sad bit of news here.. Who cares where she was born?? If she moved to Calgary at the age of 3, and is in her 20's (I imagine), then I call her an Albertan. And the little sidebar about the soccer player with a father born in Stephenville is even more pathetic. How about covering some Rugby, Softball, Boxing or something local instead of some wrestler who was born in a city she probably hasn't visited since she left (pure speculation). Must be slow at the office at the Tely....

Sorry, but she does not wear her Newfoundland birth like a badge of honor. She considers herself a Western Canadian and that is her prerogative. She's never had any sporting presence here and wasn't promoted as a Newfoundlander when the Canadian Olympic Team was announced. Let her be, don't try to make a story that really does not resonate with the athlete or the audience here.
