Best-ever finish for this country in a FIBA female age-group tourney

Newfoundland’s Hannah Jardine helped Canada to an historic win in the FIBA under-17 world women’s basketball championships Sunday in Amsterdam.

Jardine had six points and two rebounds in 13 minutes of play as Canada defeated Japan 84-77 for a bronze medal.

It marked the first time Canada has medaled in the women world championship age-group event.

“Unbelievable effort...we got down, but did not quit,” said head coach Carly Clarke. “This group has been resilient the entire time we've been together and today was another great example of that.

“As we have all tournament, we got meaningful contributions from all 12 players on the team. This was a great group of people and players to work with and I look forward to watching them continue to develop over the years.”

Jardine is entering Grade 12 at O’Donel High School in Mount Pearl. She led the O’Donel Patriots to the 2012 provincial Hall of Fame Cup (Elite Eight) female title.
