The St. John’s IceCaps will have another forward with National Hockey League experience trying out for the team when it opens training camp Oct. 1 in Corner Brook.
Brian Sutherby, a veteran of 460 NHL games with the Washington Capitals, Anaheim Ducks and Dallas Stars, has been invited to the IceCaps’ camp on a PTO (professional tryout).
Sutherby joins former Rochester American and Portland Pirate Derek Whitmore on a PTO. Whitmore, who registered 28 and 27 goals the past two years in the American Hockey League, also had a brief two-game stint with the Buffalo Sabres last season.
Sutherby was limited to 15 games on a PTO with the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage in 2011-12. He missed most of the season following back surgery to repair a herniated disc.
The Capitals’ first-round choice (26th overall) in the 2000, Entry Draft Sutherby has 41 NHL goals and 90 career points.
A 30-year-old native of Edmonton, he was extended the offer by the Jets during the off-season.
While Sutherby has reached agreement on the tryout contract with St. John’s, he has also been given permission by Winnipeg to seek an NHL deal, on the stipulation the Jets have the right to match.
Other new players with NHL experience set to join the IceCaps are forward Alexander Burmistrov, who had 13 goals and 28 points for the Jets last year, and defenceman Dean Arsene, who appeared in 13 games for the Edmonton Oilers three years ago.
