Joey Sides

It’s only a small sign, but at least it’s a positive one as it relates to injuries on the St. John’s IceCaps.

On Monday,  IceCaps today announced they have reassigned forward Joey Sides to the Colorado Eagles of the ECHL. The move wasn’t really a comment how Sides played in his half-dozen games with St. John’s, but more a reaction to captain Jason Jaffray’s return to the lineup.

Jaffray played in Sunday’s 4-0 win over the Providence Bruins after missing five games with a shoulder injury.

St. John’s had 10 players sidelined with injuries before Jaffray’s recuperation. That had led to a half-dozen recalls from ECHL teams, including four from the Eagles.

There’s also the matter of Colorado’s desperate need for players. The Eagles, who are dealing with their own injuries and roster issues, had just 12 skaters available when they took on the Stockton Thunder Saturday, but still managed to come away with a 2-1 win.

The 26-year-old Sides had two assists and two penalty minutes with St. John’s. In 19 games with the Eagles this season, he had nine goals, 18 points and 36 penalty minutes.

The Icecaps, who have won the first two -games of what will be an eight game road trip (they beat the Northeast Division-leading Springfield Falcons 3-2 in overtime on Saturday), are in the basement of the  AHL’s Atlantic Division. but only five points behind the division-leading Portland Pirates.

They’ll look to close the gap further when they take on the Adirondack Phantoms on Wednesday night in Glens Falls, N.Y.
