- Jackie Barrett - Proud Special Olympian

As a Special Olympian, I'm ashamed that for the third year in a row, "The Telegram" has not mentioned any Special Olympians or Special Olympics related news as a highlight. Last year, Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador made the news often. In fact, at the 2012 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in St. Albert, Alberta, St. John's area Snowshoer, Jeremy Mueller, won Gold Medals in all his events. This achievement allowed him to be named to Team Canada for the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games starting later this month in Pyeongchang, South Korea. To cap a remarkable year for Jeremy Mueller was the fact he was elected Special Olympics Canada's "Male Athlete of the Year". Special Olympics Corner Brook also made the news in 2012 when the City of Corner Brook was awarded a right to host the 2016 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, marking the first time that Newfoundland and Labrador will host a national level Special Olympics event. Hosting a national level event will have a positive impact on this province's Special Olympic program. At the end of the day, with Special Olympians not getting mentioned as a sports highlight for the third year in a row, I hope they will get more attention in the coming year as Jeremy Mueller will be competing at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Pyeongchang, and Special Olympians at the Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games for a spot at the 2014 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Vancouver or even the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, I hope that Special Olympians will get more attention in the coming year.
