Carl Klingberg, with his first goal in more than seven weeks, scored the game-winner as the St. John's IceCaps defeated the Pirates 4-3 at Mile One Centre, the second time in as many nights that the IceCaps posted a one-goal win over the Pirates, who fell 3-2 to St. John's Tuesday.

Klingberg, who hadn't scored in more than seven weeks, ended his personal drought on a power-play early in the third period, wiring a rebound of a Kael Mouillierat shot high into the goal past Pirates' netminder Chad Johnson.

That made the score 4-2. Defenceman David Rundblad, just assigned to Portland from the parent Phoenix Coyotes, scored on a Pirates' power-play with less than three minutes remaiining in the game, but the IceCaps held on for their eighth win in their last 11 games (8-2-1).

Mouillierat, team captain Jaon Jaffray and Vinny Saponari, the latter with his first pro goal, also scored for St. John's (31-34-6).

Darian Dziurzinsky and Andy Miele had the other goals for Portland (38-28-5), which is sixth in the Eastern Conference, but found itself once again denied points to help secure a playoff spot.

Mark Dekanich made 28 saves in the St. John's goal, while the Pirates' Johnson faced 27 shots.

For a second straight game, defenceman and Goulds native James Melindy was a healthy scratch for Portland, leaving him still looking for his first pro appearance ... A first-period fight featured the IceCaps' Ray Sawada and the Pirates' Matt Clackson. That's Matt Clackson, the son of former NHL tough guy Kim Clackson, who played for Pittsburgh, Quebec and the old Winnpeg Jets of the WHA... Wednesday was the AHL trade deadline and there were moves involving both the IceCaps and Pirates. St. John's, somewhat surprisingly, given that a playoff berth isn't realistic for the IceCaps, actually picked up a player, getting checking centre Mathieu Tousignant on loan from the Texas Stars. This season, Tousignant had a goal in 18 games with Dallas's farm team and four goals and 15 assists in 28 games with Idaho of the ECHL ... The Pirates are getting veteran forward Troy Bodie on loan from the Norfolk Admirals... Neither Tousignant or Bodie have joined their new teams yet, but Finnish goalie Jussi (Juho) Olkinuora is in St. John's after signing an amateur try-out deal with the IceCaps... Prior to Wednesday's game, the IceCaps hosted a ceremony to add four names to the Media Wall of Fame at Mile One Centre. The quartet includes legendary hockey broadcaster Howie Meeker; the late Jack Tobin, who began calling local games on radio in the 1930s, the late Fred Jackson, the longtime Telegram sports editor; and the late Ted Patey, who hosted the Amateur Sports Hour on local cable TV  ... Wednesday's Coors Light thre stars: 1. Mouillierat 2. IceCaps' defenceman Travis Ramsey 3. Miele  ... The Mary Browns hardest-working IceCap: rookie Adam Lowry, who earned his first pro point with an assist on Saponari's goal ...
