The third annual Telegram City Invitational Golf Tournament is scheduled this weekend and one of the organizers says the event is getting more popular each year.
The three sites for the event — Baly Hally, Clovelly and GlenDenning — rotate each year. This year the first round will be played at Bally Haly on Saturday and the second round at Clovelly on Sunday.
Jon Schwartz of Clovelly along with Steve Hawco of Bally Haly and Allan Murphy of GlenDenning are the co-chairs for the tourney.
Schwartz pointed out that all three courses were used the first year of the event, but “everyone felt that was a bit to much,” so now two courses host the event on a rotating basis.
The tournament is a 36-hole stroke play event, with tee times starting at noon for each round.
The competition includes last year’s three top 10 players from each of the three clubs as well as six committee picks for a total of 36 competitors.
Schwartz said there’s a genuine competition among the top golfers in the province to see who is the best in the tourney which basically kicks off the golf season.
“Every year there seems to be more interest from the individual clubs,” Schwartz noted. “And it’s only getting better.
“It’s also a great tune-up for the provincials in Gander the following weekend,” he added.
Defending champion is Michael Tibbo of Corner Brook who was one of the committee picks last season.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three gross players.
