For the third straight year, the Gander Golf Club’s Blair Bursey won the overall junior and juvenile divisions at the Golf Newfoundland Labrador provincial championships at the Blomidon Golf and Country Club in Corner Brook on Thursday.

Clovelly’s Jillian Lawlor won the girls’ junior division, clubmate Lorraine Coleman was the top juvenile and Blomidon’s Abigail Hickey was best in bantam play.

The 16-year-old Bursey, who finished third in the provincial men’s amateur championship at Gander last week,  carded a third-round 77 for a three-day total of 224 to take top spot in both divisions. Juvenile competitor Nathan Peters, of Clovelly, had the day’s low score with a 75 and finished just behind Bursey in overall standings. The host club’s Ryan Burton was third overall with a three day 227.

Bursey, Peters and Burton will represent the province at the national junior boys championship, July 30-Aug. 2, at the Timberwolf Golf Club in Sudbury, Ont.  Bursey is al;so on the provincial men’s amateur team.

Clovelly’s Drew Stonehouse was third in juvenile play with a 244 and the boys’ bantam division was dominated by Blomidon golfers with Matthew Bonnell (240) finishing first, followed by clubmates Andrew Bruce (255) and Daniel Bruce (264).

Lawlor, who led from the first round, shot a third-round 97 and finished with a three day 285, five strokes better than Coleman (290). Jayne Hamlyn, of the Grand Falls-Windsor club, was third with a three-round score of 292.

The top three finish earned the ladies a spot on the province’s team at the Royale Cup Canadian junior girls tournament, July 30-Aug. 2, in Pickering, Ont at the Cherry Downs Golf and Country Club.

In juvenile girls action, Humber Valley Resort’s Angela Earle (295) was second while Glendenning’s Raylene Mackey (306) hung on for third despite shooting a 105 in the final round. The only other bantam girl entrant, Blomidon’s Paige Hickey, finished with a 439.
