Peters, Hamlyn top golfers for province so far

 at Future Links Atlantic event

Nathan Peters of Clovelly Golf in St. John’s and Jayne Hamlyn of the Grand Falls Golf Club lead the Newfoundland and Labrador contingent in a field of 65 boys and 21 girls after the first day of play at the 2013 CN Future Links Atlantics golf championships in Antigonish, N.S.

Peters carded a six-over-par 78 to lead the Newfoundland and Labrador boys’ team and is seven  strokes off the pace.

Ryan Burton from Blomidon Golf Club in Corner Brook is tied for 16th with a first-day total of 80 followed by Daniel Cluney of Humber Valley Resort with an 81 and tied for 20th with follow west coast player Mathew Bonnell.

Provincial junior champion Blair Bursey of Gander, the 2012 Future Links Atlantic runner-up, struggled from the outset carding an 83, placing him in a tie for 29th..

Other notable players in the field include Jack McCarthy of Clovelly who is tied for 43rd place, while Zack Hiscock of Blomidon, who recorded a 91 and Drew Stonehouse with a 92.

 Raylene Mackey of Glendenning Golf in St. John’s carded a 92, good for 15th position. Mackey is closely followed by provincial junior ladies’ champion, Jillian Lawlor and Lorraine Coleman of Clovelly and Angela Earle from Humber Valley Resort who recorded scores of 94, 98 and 100 respectively. Rounding out the provincial contingent is Kelly Brown with a 114.


Storm held back by Feildians

Feildians Ellsworth Group built up a seven-run lead after four innings and held on to defeat H.J. Bartlett Electric Storm 7-5 in St. John’s Molson senior baseball Tuesday at St. Pat’s Ball Park.

Greg Barry tossed the win on a six-hitter with five strikeouts. John Walsh got the save.

Nick Hayden (3.2IP, 7R, 3H, 10W, 2K) took the loss. Adam Lawlor finished up.

Matt Sullivan drove in three runs for the winners.

Mike Dyke and Steve Brien had two hits each for Storm.

In another senior game, this one at Smallwood Field in Mount Pearl, the Holy Cross Trinity Pub Crusaders edged the Metro Property Management Knights 5-4.

In an intermediate game at St. Pat’s, Feildians nipped Holy Cross 4-3 with the help of two walks and two errors in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Andrew Wright (7IP, 3R, 4H, 6W, 9K) pitched the win. Elliott Phillips (6IP, 4R, 5H, 7W, 3K) took the loss.

Scott Fleming and Matt Murphy had two hits each for Feildians.


O’Neill helps Atlantic side to win

at national all-star championships

Holly O’Neill had a goal Tuesday as the Atlantic Under-15 girls edged Saskatchewan/Manitoba 2-1 in the Canadian all-star championships in Thunder Bay Ont.

O’Neill is one of 10 Newfoundland and Labrador players on the four Atlantic clubs in the championships.

Meghan Pierce and Nicole Torraville are others on the U15 squad, while Spencer Wilkins is a member of the U16 club. The U16 girls are coached by Dragan Mirkovic of St. John’s.

While the girls are playing in Thunder Bay, the boys are in Laval, Que.

Gerry O’Brien is U15 boys’ manager ,with players Riley Lingard, Michael O’Brien, and Nick Power and the U16 players are DJ Clarke, Owen McAleese and Connor Simmonds.


King does it all for Don Cherry’s

Pitcher Donny King helped his own cause with a three-run homer as Don Cherry’s St. John’s defeated the NL Plumbing Hitmen 7-5 in Molson St. John’s senior softball Tuesday night at Lion’s Park.

King pitched a six-hitter over four innings to pick up the win with Mike Noftall (3IP, 1H, 1W, 5K) finishing up.

Robbie Greene, in relief of starter Sean Cadigan, took the loss.

Keith Maynard had two hits an drove in two runs for Don Cherry’s.

Danny Mullins had three hits in four at bats for the losers.

Molson Bulldogs 15, Junior Canadians 0 (4 innings)

Jon Kelly went four-for-four with a solo home run for Kelly’s Pub Molson Bulldogs. Shane Boland had three hits.

Blair Ezekiel tossed the win over Mark Power.

In an intermediate game Monday, Shane McGrath had three hits to pace BK Services to an 11-1 win over Bay Roberts Coors Light.

Shawn Everson tossed the win over Rylee Costello.


Mason, Corbett lead Dream Kitchens to  victory

Janice Mason delivered four hits in four trips to the plate as Dream Kitchens blanked Angels 9-0 in St. John’s women’s softball Tuesday night at Wyatt Park.

Amy Corbett tossed a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts to get the win over Jenna Connolly.

Rebecca Maher and Victoria Woolridge each had two hits for the winners.


Shutout win for Mount Pearl

Mount Pearl Electronic Centre/Molson blanked St. John’s U16 3-0 in Breen’s Jubilee Trophy women’s soccer Monday night at Smallwood Park.

Dana Brewer, Amy Brushett and Marissa McDonald each scored once.
