SOFTBALL

Provincial women’s championship begins today

Four teams will participate in the provincial Molson senior women’s softball tournament starting today at Sgt. Ned Nugent Field in Kelligrews.

The teams entered are Angels, Diamonds, Dream Kitchens and Whelan’s Gate.

Saturday

9:30 a.m., Dream Kitchens vs. Angels

11:15 a.m., Diamonds vs. Whelan’s Gate

1 p.m., Dream Kitchens vs. Whelan’s Gate

2:45 p.m. Diamonds vs. Angels

5:30 p.m. Semifinal, 4th place vs 1st place

7:15 p.m. Semifinal, 3rd place vs 2nd place

10:30 a.m., championship game

Greene, Walsh take

monthly player-of-the-month honours

Pitcher Robbie Greene of the NL Plumbing Hitmen has been chosen the Molson Coors senior softball player of the month for June in the Molson St. John’s Senior Men’s League.

Greene posted a 5-1 record with two shutouts. He had 67 strikeouts and posted a 2.03 ERA.

Colin Walsh of Goulds is the intermediate league player of the month.

Walsh, a pitcher first baseman, batted 10-20 for a .500 batting average in June.

 In eight games, he scored 14 runs and drove in eight.

He was also named the MVP of the Swing Into Summer tournament.

Breen scores four times

as Holy Cross posts shutout victory

Laura Breen scored four goals to pace C.B.S. Holy Cross Kirby Group to a 6-0 win over St. John’s U16s in Breen’s Jubilee Trophy women’s soccer Thursday night at King George V Park.

Malorie Harris and Kaelyn Burke each scored once.

In other games Thursday:

• Mount Pearl Electronic Centre Molson and the Molson U16 team played to a 1-1 ties. Chelsea Tiller had the goal for Electronic Centre, at 73 minutes, with the under-16s tying it on an own goal 12 minutes later.

• The Canada Games tam downed Feildians 4-1. Jessie Noseworthy, Jenny Tiller, Maria Mackey, and Meghan Earle scored for the winners. Feildians’ Liz McPhail scored the game’s first goal seven minutes in.
