Sims wins bantam division in Grand Falls

Michael Simms carded an even-par 35 over the front nine holes to win the bantam division in Wednesday’s Tely Junior Golf Tour stop at the Grand Falls Golf Club. The 12-year-old plays out of the Clovelly Golf Club in St. John’s. Evan D’Angelo was six shots behind in second and Nash Denic’s 42 was third.

Andrew Bruce and Matthew Bonnell fired 81s over 18 holes to tie for first in a very crowded and tight juvenile field. Grant Lane’s 82 was good for second, while Daniel Bruce and Jacob Parsons shot an 83 to lock down third.

Daniel Penney was the top junior with a 98, two shots better than Jonathan Cashin and seven strokes ahead of Zachary Parsons, the only other golfers in the division.

Jayne Hamlyn ran away with the girls’ division, shooting a 44 over nine holes. Abigail Hickey took second with a 64 while Taylor Cormier and Paige Hickey had matching 73s and tied for third.

The tour continues today with the Gander Junior Open.


Provincial midget AA tourney in Corner Brook

The Corner Brook Barons play host to the Pepsi provincial 18-and-under midget AA championship this weekend at Jubilee Field.

Joining the defending champion Barons are the St. John’s A and AA Capitals, the C.B.S. Raider, the C.B.N. Bulldogs, the Gander Pilots, and the Grand Falls-Windsor Braves.

The tournament opens Friday with the hosts taking on the Braves at 1:30 p.m. The championship game goes Sunday at 5:30 p.m.

The winning team will represent the province at the Atlantic midget championships in Napan, N.B., on the Labour Day weekend.


Provincial masters qualifier this weekend at KGV

Four teams will take part in the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association’s masters provincial qualifier this weekend at King George V Park in St. John’s.

Looking to advance to the Eastern masters club championship in Quebec City this September are Mount Pearl/Old Dutch/ProActive Physio, Duck of Duckworth/Molson, Holy Cross/Trinity Pub, and Feildians Puglisezich.

The single round-robin tournament starts Friday, 6:30 p.m., when the Duke hits the pitch against Cross. Feildians and Mount Pearl go at 8:30 with the two winning teams meeting for the championship game Sunday at 6:30 p.m.


Power provides power for Power

Matt Power (3IP, 2H, 3W, 2K) hit a pair of home runs and picked up the win for Power Conditioning in an 11-8 8-inning win over Lafontaince Club Molson in Molson St. John’s intermediate softball Wednesday night.

Power four-for-five on the night, belted two-run and three-run homers, with six RBIs in total. Starting pitcher Shawn Hefferan (5IP, 8R, 9H, 5W, 1HBP, 3K) scored twice.

Jeremy O’Reilly (5IP, 4R, 5H, 4K), pitching in relief of Nick Pittman (3IP, 7R, 6H, 2W, 3K), took the loss.

Steven Pittman scored three times, Pittman scored twice, and Russell Woodman hit a two-RBI double.


Bay Roberts Coors Light 3, BK Services 0

Chris Hussey (7IP, 1W) tossed a three-hitter with nine strikeouts, while Colin Mercer hit a solo home run and scored another to lead Bay Roberts .

Rod Cantwell (2R, 5H, 1HBP, 1K) lasted three innings before handing the ball over Shawn Everson (3IP, 1R, 2H, 1W, 6K)

Kevin Fitzpatrick, Mark Byrne and Gilbert Power had the only hits off Hussey.
