Ladha, Inkpen sail to
their second Canadian championship
Jonathan Ladha and Daniel Inkpen won the 49er class at the Canadian sailing championships this past weekend in Kingston, Ont.
This is the second time the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club members, the only Newfoundlanders to ever make the national sailing team, have won the title. They last won it in 2010, and finished second in 2011. In 2012, the duo were North American champs.
Ladha and Inkpen are working towards earning the right to represent Canada at the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Kent, Goosney a winning combination
Bob Kent (5IP, 2H, 6K) pitched a gem and Scott Goosney (1R, 2H, 2K) worked the sixth and seventh innings to preserve the win and earn the save as the Trapper John’s Shamrocks downed the Ellsworth Group Feildians 3-1 in St. John’s Molson senior baseball action Monday.
At St. Pat’s Ball Park, Trevor Clarke and Scott Stockley each had a pair of hits in three trips to the plate for the Shammies, who scored two in the first and added an insurance marker in the fourth.
Dan Phillips (3.2IP, 3R, 6H, 2W, 3K) started and took the loss with Corey Ewart (2.1IP, 2H, 1W) in relief.
Matt Sullivan scored for the Double Blues.
Strickland hits walk-off home run for Bay Roberts
Down 6-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Scott Strickland his a two-out, two-run homer to give Bay Roberts Coors Light a 7-6 win over the C.B.C. Junior Canadians in Molson St. John’s intermediate softball Monday evening.
At Lions Park, Colin Mercer also hit a two-run shot for the winners whose Chris Hussey (6R, 7H, 2W, 1HBP, 6K) went the distance.
Johnny Doyle (6.2IP, 7R, 7H, 2W) fanned 15 in a losing cause.
Brady Lewis went yard with a two-run homer, Phillip Corbett drilled a solo dinger and Aaron Whelan scored a pair for the Junior Canadians.

Geoff Hefferan scored four times — once on an inside the park home run — while teammates Stephen Dobbin and Justin Hand drove in two runs apiece for the winners.
Jeremy Hickey (4IP, 1R, 3H, 1W, 2K) picked up the win in relief of Jordan Noftall (3IP, 5R, 4H, 1W, 4K).
Corey Drake drove in a pair of runs for Power, with Trevor Heffernan (7IP, 11R, 14H, 3W, 4K) taking the loss.
