In this July 9, 2013 file photo, swimmer Owen Daly carries the provincial flag during a rally for Newfoundland and Labrador’s Canada Games team at the Provincial Sports Centre in St. John’s. Daly will get to carry the province’s colours again tonight. As flagbearer, he’ll lead Team Newfoundland and Labrador at the opening ceremonies for the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que. Daly is also seen as one of the province’s top medal contenders in the first week of the Games.

I have to agree with the comments and think it is sad. One area that tends to be a chronic issue in Newfoundland and Labrador sport is the lack of supervision over each individual association and the sufficient effort made by many of the individual sport associations to recruit and find the best athletes across the whole province. Newfoundland and Labrador have many different areas that compete in many different sports. Take basketball for example, check out the location of all but one of the basketball players. It just happens to be that both coaches are from St. John's as well. I can guarantee you that there are basketball players elsewhere in the province that would be able and willing to compete at that level and contribute to the success of Newfoundland and Labrador sport. I think the government in NL has to start realizing that this province is now a "have "province and should start treating it's athletics like that as well. So many of these associations are put together on a shoestring budget, and expected to compete with other provinces. If no one else has noticed, the name of the province is Newfoundland and Labrador… I haven't seen too many Labrador athletes being represented at the Canada games… Why?… Again, it comes down to provincial funding and how much emphasis the ministry puts on Athletics which is as little as they have to. This great province of Newfoundland and Labrador goes well beyond the confinements of St. John's and Mount PearI, even though they are the largest centers. I completely respect all the athletes within these areas and how hard they worked to get where they are in representing NL and I'm proud of each and everyone of them. It sure would be nice to see solid representation from every area as well. And yes, I am speaking from experience as a past NL provincial athlete competing towards the Canada games from outside the major centres. The provincial support for my experience was embarrassing to say the least and if posts like this can even remotely help the next athlete in an outlining area get more support, I will write these all day long.

The two non-Newfoundlanders on the women's volleyball team play for MUN's varsity team.

  • Female Volleyball Team NL or Not
    August 02, 2013 - 13:20

After reading the name of the athletes I am amazed that the only sport that went outside the province for athletes is Female Volleyball! Why would we have to go outside the province when there were many capable athletes from NL. What does this say for the NLVA provincial program! Very disappointing that we are so focused on medalling that we would sacrifice our own athletes!

Well confused, I think thats an interesting comment.. I'd like to hear the answer to that as well Minister French. Was there no one in Nl capable of filling up the team NL teams to send to Canada Games. Shameful

    Go Team NL.

Team NL. How come the Womens volleyball team has a girl from New Brunswick and BC on the team representing NL. Is there no one on the island qualified enough to make up 12 girls. Must have been some slap in the face to all the athletes in Newfoundland and Labrador. Who makes up the eligibility rules.
