In this submitted photo, swimmers take to the waters of Octagon Pond for the 2012 Paradise Triathlon. Last year, there was only a sprint triathlon in Paradise, but there are three races in the Body Quest event this year: a kids duathlon today, as well as sprint and Olympic-distance triathlons on Sunday.
The Body Quest Paradise Triathlon takes place this weekend at Octagon Pond.
The fifth annual race, which was moved from June to August this year in hopes of warmer water, features three events: a kids duathlon today, plus a sprint and Olympic (standard) distance triathlon scheduled for Sunday morning at 8 a.m.
The triathlon feature an open-water swim in Octagon Pond, followed by a cycling portion along nearby roads and highways, and a brisk run of the trails surrounding the pond.
The Olympic distance event features a 1.5-kilometre swim, a 50km bike ride and a 10km trail run, with the sprint event covering half those distances.
Cash prizes in the amount of $300, $200, $100 will be awarded to the top three males and females in both the standard and sprint distance events.
Lewin’s Cove’s Jordan Baird and Katherine McBay were the top male and female finishers last year when only a sprint distance event was offered.
The kids duathlon, starting at 9 a.m., offers children aged five to 14 a run-bike-run event with distances varying for each age group.
