Following a 10-2 win over the Kitchener, Ont. Cubs in the afternoon, 3Cheers improved to 6-0 with a 2-0 win over Don Cherry’s St. John’s in the evening draw.
Petty Harbour native Sean Whitten (7IP, 4H, 1W) fanned 13 batters, with Jeff Ellsworth and Shane Boland scored the runs. John Farrell went two-for-three.
Donny King (7IP, 2R, 6H, 2W, 5K) took the loss. Stephen Jesso had a pair of hits for Don Cherry’s, which fell to 3-3 heading into today, the final day of round-robin play.
Against the Cubs, Jason Hill hit a two-run home run and drove in two more runs with a fifth inning RBI-single that put ended the game on the tourney’s seven-run mercy rule. Ryan Boland also hit a two-run homer, while Ian Fehrman and Stephen Mullaley jacked solo shots.
Sean Cleary (5IP, 10K) tossed a two-hitter.
Don Cherry’s came away from Thursday with a split, having bested the host Shakespeare, Ont. , Falcons 10-0 earlier in the day on the strength of a pair of Saskatchewan imports.
Brennan Pokoyoway hit a grand slam and Trevor Ethier tossed a two-hitter.
Stephen Jesso hit two home runs, while Jon Kelly kept swinging the hot bat with a two-for-three showing.
Don Cherry’s closes out the preliminary round against the Scarborough, Ont., Force and East Hants, N.S., Mastadons, while 3Cheers take on the Mastadons in the morning and the Charlottetown, P.E.I., Fawcetts later in the day.
