Holy Cross shines in face of Storm

Sean Janes allowed just two hits as Holy Cross Trinity Pub defeated the H.J. Bartlett Electric Storm 10-0 in St. John’s Molson senior baseball game at Smallwood Field in Mount Pearl Thursday night.

Janes struck out six and walked two in a game shortened to five innings by the league’s mercy rule.

Gerry Stone had three hits, including a solo homer, for the winners. Justin Crawley and Dean Norman had two hits each for Holy Cross.

Steve Bailey (11H, 9W, 0K) took the loss.

St. John’s takes girls’ U14 crown

St. John’s won the 2013 Subway provincial A under-14 female soccer championship Thursday night at the King George V Park  with a 2-0 victory over Mount Pearl.

Katie Joyce scored both St. John’s goals and Sydney Walsh posted the shutout.

With the victory, St. John’s advances into the national championships Oct. 9-14 in Lethbridge, Alta.

Members of the St. John’s team include Julia Bartlett, Camille Burt, Kelsey Crocker, Sarah Crocker, Becky Daley, Anna Edwards, Shawna Foley, Olivia Kearley, Aimee Kieley, Jamie King, Victoria Linehan, Erica McShane, Maria Mills, Kaitlyn Morgan, Emma Murray, Haley O’Grady, Gabrielle Roche, Claire Sheppard, Heather Whitten, Frances Winsor, coach Francisco Caimangue, assistant coach Mark Murray, assistant coach Scott Betts and manager Kim Morgan.

St. John’s Metro defeated Conception Bay South 3-1 for the bronze medal. Becky Delaney, Heather Whitten and Haley O'Grady scored for the winners. Kylie Woodford had the CBS goal.

INTERMEDIATE SOFTBALL

MJR’s Janes, Kennedy hook up for no-hitter

Winner Adam Janes (4IP, 1W, 5K) and reliever David Kennedy (2IP, 2K) combined to pitch a no-hitter as MJR Masonry dumped BK services 7-0 in Molson St. John’s intermediate softball Wednesday night at Lions Park.

The game was called after six innings on the league’s seven-run mercy rule.

Kennedy hit a two-run home run, while Zack Janes scored twice and drove in another.

Shawn Everson (5.2IP, 7KR, 6H, 2W) took the loss.

C.B.C. Junior Canadians 8, Game on Gear 5

Johnny Doyle (7IP, 5R, 6H, 1W) fanned fourteen and Phillip Corbet scored three times, one on a solo home run.

Jordan Noftall (7IP, 8R, 9H, 3W, 6K) took the loss. Justin Hand and Brad Budden had two RBI each for Game on Gear.
