Canadian women’s figure skating champ returns for first time since winning title

An enthusiastic hometown crowd greeted Kaetlyn Osmond in Marystown today.

The 17-year-old's arrival early this afternoon marked her first visit to the community since she was crowned the 2013 Canadian women’s figure skating champion back in January.

A motorcade through the town brought Osmond to Marystown Arena, where several hundred people, many of them young children, greeted her.

Cheers erupted throughout a replay on a video screen of her short and long programs during the competition that began today’s ceremony.

Osmond laughed and smiled broadly as a loud ‘Go, Kaetlyn, Go!’ chant filled the building while she was speaking to the crowd.

“I’ve been completely speechless ever since I’ve gotten here. I know I have your support, but now I really see it, and it’s really motivating for me to keep going for the rest of this season,” she acknowledged.

"None of what I accomplish, or what I hope to accomplish, would even be possible without me starting here, with the help of everyone in this room already, and all your support, it means the world to me.”

Osmond’s mother, Jackie, and siblings Gary and Natasha, who she credits for inspiring her to start skating, joined her on stage, along with several other dignitaries.

Though she moved away several years ago, she said the town still feels like home.

“Everything feels so similar to me. Everything feels just perfect, being home again, especially after not being here for two and a half years.”

Osmond will attend a fundraising dinner for Short Circuit Dream Fund at St. Gabriel’s Hall this evening. Tomorrow, she will visit her old school, Sacred Heart Academy, in the morning.
