Shammies move to final after knocking off Holy Cross
The Trapper John’s Shamrocks punched their ticket to the St. John’s Molson senior league final after finishing off Holy Cross Trinity Pub in four games with a 7-5 win in the teams’ best-of-five semifinal Monday.
The Shammies will seek their 20th title against the Gonzaga Roebothan McKay Marshall Vikings, who are in search of their fourth after eliminating the H.J. Bartlett Electric Storm this past weekend.
The first game in the best-of-seven final is set for 6 p.m. Thursday night at St. Pat’s.
At St. Pat’s Ball Park, the boys in green and gold scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to finish off the defending champs. Scott Goosney (2.2IP, 1R, 2H, 1W, 3K) tossed the win in relief of starter Bob Kent (5.1IP, 4R, 4H, 7W, 5K).
Sean Janes (7IP, 5R, 10H, 2W, 1K) was on the rubber for the loss, with an inning’s relief from Gerry Stone (1IP, 2R, 4H).
David Buckingham was three-for-four with a pair of doubles for the winners.
Bay Roberts, Junior Canadians advance in playoffs
Bay Roberts Coors Light and The C.B.C. Junior Canadians advanced to the Molson St. John’s intermediate softball league semifinal round after closing out their best-of-three quarter-finals series Monday evening at Lions Park.
Bay Roberts’ Chris Hynes drove in a pair of runs to help his team to an extra-inning 5-4 win over BK Services. Bay Roberts took the series 2-0.
Chris Hussey (91IP, 4R, 10H, 1HBP, 1W, 6K) earned the victory. Stephen Oates had two hits and scored once.
Shawn Everson (8IP, 5R, 9H, 10K) took the loss for BK, whose Kevin Fitzpatrick hit a solo home run.
C.B.C. 4, Lafontaine Club Molson 3
Johnny Doyle (7IP, 2R, 6H, 1W) fanned 11 and Aaron Whelan drove in a pair to help the Junior Canadians close out the series in two games.
Jeff Conway and Brady Lewis both collected two hits in three at-bats, with each scoring once.
Johnny O’Reilly (6IP, 4R, 6H, 2W) had 12 strikeouts in a losing cause. Jeremy O’Reilly, Joey Evely and Paul Maher had two hits apiece.
