Sean Cleary named tournament MVP

Tournament MVP Sean Cleary tossed a two-hitter and struck out 11 in five innings of work, and for good measure smacked a pair of home runs — a two-run shot and a solo blast — as Kelly’s Pub Molson Bulldogs trimmed Don Cherry’s St. John’s 9-1 in five innings to win the 2013 Molson provincial senior men’s softball championship at Lions Park in St. John’s.

Kelly’s went 4-0 in the five-team tournament.

Mike Noftall (3.2IP, 9R, 12H, 2BB, 5K) started for Don Cherry’s, and was tagged with the loss. Donny King pitched a third of an inning, registering one strikeout.

John Farrell hit a three-run home run and Jon Kelly had a two-run shot for Kelly’s.

Cleary had three hits, and Farrell, Kelly and Blair Ezekiel each had a pair of hits.

Bryan Clarke and Craig Edmunds had the only hits for Don Cherry’s.

Cleary was 3-0 in the tournament, with a 1.47 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 19 innings. At the plate, he was five-for-11 with a pair of home runs and four RBI.

Bryan Clarke of Don Cherry’s was the top batter with a .500 average and Andrew Wade of the Bulldogs won the sportsmanship and ability award. Wade hit .333.

Members of the championship team are Gary Bruce, Shane Boland, Donny Cleary, Sean Cleary, Warren Connors, Blair Ezekiel, John Farrell, Eric Healey, Jon Kelly, Mark Lewis, Liam Myers, Scott Myers, Shane O’Brien, Stephen Strapp, Andrew Wade and coaches Jim Dunphy and Ron Ezekiel.

 

SEMIFINALS

Bulldogs 2, NL Plumbing Hitmen 1

The Bulldogs got a pair of home runs from Donny Cleary and Andrew Wade, the latter with the game-winner in the sixth inning, to advance to the final.

Cleary (7IP, 1R, 8H, 0BB, 12K) won over Robbie Greene (6IP, 2R, 4H, 5BB, 8K).

Fergus Griffiths was 3-for-3 for the Hitmen.

 

Don Cherry’s 8, Kelly’s Pub Junior Canadians 3

Noftall (7IP, 3R, 7H, 2BB, 14K) pitched the win and hit a grand slam home run in a six-run sixth inning to power Don Cherry’s. Geoff Evely had a pair of doubles and Stephen Jesso had two hits for the winners with three RBI.

Don Cherry’s added two more runs in the seventh inning for good measure.

Colin Walsh (5.1IP, 3R, 3H, 3BB, 3K) started for the Junior Canadians and was tagged with the loss. Mark Power (1.2IP, 5R, 3H, 2BB, 1K) came on in relief.

Mark Power was 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs, a solo blast and two-run homer.
