Patrice Cormier’s second goal on the year, at 15:56 of the third period, proved to be the winner as the St. John’s IceCaps got by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 2-1 in American Hockey League play Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
The win improved the IceCaps to 7-7-1-1 on the year. The Penguins, second overall in the Eastern Conference, are 11-3-0-2.
Eddie Pasquale was named the game’s first star with a 31-save performance. The IceCaps managed 16 shots on Jeff Deslauriers.
The Penguins’ Harry Zolnierczyk opened scoring at 13:23 of the first period, but Travis Ehrhardt, with his first of the year, evened the score 1-1 at 16:39 of the opening frame, setting the stage for Cormier’s game-winner.
The IceCaps played without Zach Redmond, who was reassigned from Winnipeg earlier in the day. Redmond has only appeared in five games this season, two with the IceCaps and three with the Winnipeg Jets.
He should be in the lineup tonight when the IceCaps and Penguins hook up again.
Friday’s game was the first of six road games for the IceCaps.
