Back-to-back vs. Crunch starting tonight

They might not be divisional foes, but the St. John’s IceCaps and Syracuse Crunch are quite familiar with each other.

Dating back to when the Crunch franchise was located in Norfolk, Va., Syracuse/Norfolk Admirals and St. John’s have met each other in at least two-dozen games, from American Hockey League pre-season contests three years running, to regular season games and a playoff matchup two years ago.

The teams meet again tonight and Wednesday as the Crunch visit Mile One Centre for a pair games beginning 7:30 each night (930 AM, Rogers TV tonight).

After splitting a pair of games last weekend against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the IceCaps enter the mid-week series at 12-10-1-2, good for eighth spot in the AHL’s Eastern Conference.

The Crunch are 11-8-1-2 and ninth in the East, dropping their last two games to the Admirals, one of which went to a shootout.

The IceCaps are coming off a 3-0 loss to the Penguins Saturday, a game that followed a 5-0 St. John’s win Friday.

The IceCaps have yet to take a two-game series on home ice this season, either splitting or losing both games of the series.

St. John’s and Syracuse met just over a week ago during the IceCaps’ six-game road trip in Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut.

In that game, the IceCaps staked the Crunch to a 2-0 lead before scoring a pair of second-period goals to tie the game.

Syracuse won it on two third-period goals, one into an empty net.
