IceCaps crown Monarchs in AHL play Saturday

Eddie Pasquale stopped 35 of 36 shots as the St. John’s IceCaps downed the Manchester Monarchs 3-1 in American Hockey League play Saturday night in Manchester.

At the Verizon Wireless Arena, Will O’Neill and Andrew Gordon scored second period goals, and Carl Klingberg added an insurance marker in the third period for the visitors. Nick Deslauriers tallied for the Monarchs with 53 seconds left in regulation time.

With the win, the IceCaps improve to 16-12-1-2 on the year.

Friday night, the IceCaps dropped a 5-2 decision to the Worcester Sharks in their first game since enjoying an 11-day Christmas break.

Freddie Hamilton, Taylor Doherty, Marek Viedensky, Brodie Reid and Eriah Hayes scored for the Sharks at the DCU Centre.

J.C. Lipon and Zach Redmond replied for St. John’s, which received a 28-save performance from Jussi Olkinuora.

The IceCaps travel to Springfield, Mass. to play the Falcons on New Years Eve before returning home and getting ready for a weekend series with the Portland Pirates Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at Mile One Centre.
