Basketballer Kelia Pond and swimmer Gavin Dyke are the latest Memorial University athletes of the week.
Pond, an engineering student from Goulds, led the Hawks to a two-game sweep of the visiting University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds at the Field House over the weekend.
A fourth-year guard and MUN’s team captain, Pond was player of the game in Saturday’s 60-52 win, scoring a season-high 23 points, then contributed nine points and a team-high 35 minutes of floor time in Sunday’s 63-49 victory.
With the two wins, the Sea-Hawks improved their record to 5-5, leaving them tied for second in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) standings with Cape Breton.
Dyke won gold medals in each of his five individual races at the AUS invitational swim meet hosted by Dalhousie University in Halifax weekend. Dyke was first in the 50-metre, 100m and 200m freestyle events and 200m and 400m individual medley relays.
The Mount Pearl native and first-year pre-psychology student also earned a bronze medal with the Sea-Hawks’ 200-metre medley relay team.
The Dal competition was the final AUS meet for Memorial prior to its hosting the 2014 Subway AUS championships Feb. 7-9 at the Aquarena.
