The girls track and field team from Gonzaga High School from St .John’s and boys team from Stephenville High have been selected to represent Newfoundland and Labrador in the 2014 Nike High School Grand Prix, the Canadian high school track and field invitational meet.
Schools are selected by each provincial or territorial sporting organization based on criteria of athletic and academic achievement. The athletes from Gonzaga and Stephenville will be among 300 representing two dozen schools from across Canada at the event, which will be held in Toronto May 8-11.
This is the third year that the Nike invitational will be held at the University of Toronto’s Varsity Stadium.
Track and field events include the 100-metre, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m runs, 110m hurdles (boys), 100m hurdles (girls), long jump, high jump, shot-put, and the 4x 100m cross-provincial relay. Athletes will be drafted into the latter event, with a mix of athletes from various provinces.
