Blackwoods leads Celtics past Flyers in St. John's junior hockey action

The BK Services Celtics got three goals from Chris Blackwood and went on to defeat Trinity Placentia I.J. Smith Home Building Centre Flyers 9-5 in Penney Kia St. John’s Junior Hockey League play Sunday in Whitbourne.

Stephen Morrissey added a pair of goals for the winners. Curtis Kavanagh, Kory Waterman, Matthew Walsh and Brandon Jewer each scored once. Kavanagh also set up four goals.

Jordan Mercer and Greg Edison each scored twice for the Flyers. Connor Stevens had one goal.

Mercer and Kavanagh were selected Jungle Jim’s players of the game.

The Flyers outshot the Celtics 37-33.

Alex Riggs was in net for Celtics, while Coady Hann worked the Flyers’ blue ice.

In Sunday’s other game, the Mount Pearl Mark’s Dakota Wild scored four third-period goals in defeating the Southern Shore C&W Offshore Breakers 6-5 at the Glacier.

Ian MacIntrye scored twice and set up one goal to pace the Wild. Damian Ryan, Aaron Moore, Andrew Pollard and Steve Barrett each scored once. Barrett added two assists.

Brandon Baird and Manasie Kendall scored two goals each for the Breakers. Riley Ricks had one.

John MacDonald was in net for the Wild, while Josh Carey was in the Breakers’ net.

Barrett and Baird were named players of the game.

St. John’s 8, Mount Pearl 2 (Saturday)

Alex Doyle and Garrett Murphy scored twice each to pace the Hickman Automotive Group Caps at Twin Rinks.

Single markers came from Joey Trenholm, Riley Edwards, Ryan Hawco and Josh Thornhill.

Ian MacIntyre and Alex Smith replied for the Wild.

The Caps outshot the Wild 32-25. Scott Bray picked up the win over Jordan Ryan and John MacDonald who shared the net for the Wild.

Avalon 4, CBR 3 OT (Saturday)

Player of the game Bobby Squires scored once and set up another for the Roebothan McKay Marshall Capitals at Robert French Arena.

Zach Tucker and Kristian Husk had the other goals for the Capitals who outshot the Renegades 46-42.

Doug Pippy got the win over Nathan Gillard.

The Capitals got two goals from Brandon O’Neill and one from Alex Tulk.

Chris Butler was named player of the game for the Renegades.

Southern Shore 4, CBR 3 (Friday)

Mitchell Martin led the C&W Offshore Breakers with three goals at the Southern Shore Arena. Manasie Kendall had the other marker for the winners..

Ryan Power, Chris Butler and Alex Tulk each scored once for the Assante Wealth Management Renegades.

Breakers outshot the Renegades 41-35. Alex Campbell was in net for the Breakers, while Mitchell Puddester was between the pipes for CBR.

Alex Campbell of the Breakers and Puddester were chosen the players of the game.

C.B.N. 4, St. John’s 3 OT (Friday)

Bradley Budden, Cody Batten, Zack Quinlan and Brandon Parrott each scored once for the MoorFrost Stars at Bay Arena.

Riley Edwards, Josh Thornhill and Ryan Hawco had the Caps’ goals.

Budden of the winners and Caps’ Grant Nolan were named players of the game.

The Caps outshot the Stars 28-26 and led 2-1 after the first period. The teams were tied 3-3 heading into the third. Connor Thompson was in net for the winners an Coady Edwards was in goal for the Caps.
