Kelligrews — Megan Normore scored a hat trick to lead the Queen Elizabeth Pioneers to a 4-0 win over the Holy Spirit Falcons in Game 1 of the Annie Parsons Shield girls high school hockey tournament Monday night at Robert French Memorial Stadium in Kelligrews.
The tournament is one of three best-of-three tournaments that are part of the town of Conception Bay South’s annual WinterFest activities.
Hilary Young added a single for the winners. Normore and the Falcons’ Shannon Hynes were named players of the game.
Game 2 of the best-of-three series is set for Wednesday, 7 p.m., at Robert French. The boys schools’ tournament, the Fred Squires Shield, gets underway Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Villanova Vipers won WinterFest’s Junior High Challenge by defeating the Frank Roberts Ravens 6-1 in Game 2 Monday. Vipers player of the game Jake Upshall scored three times with singles from Braedon Griffiths, Stefan Abbott and Nick Corcoran. Evan Bursey replied for the Ravens, earning their player of the game award.
The Vipers defeated the Ravens 2-1 in Game 1 Sunday. Noah Lambert and Ethan Stuckless counted for Villanova, while Bursey netted the lone Frank Roberts marker. He and Stuckless were chosen players of the game for their respective teams.
