St. John’s — Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador has announced its under-16 (U-16) roster that will compete at the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Excellence Challenge in Blainville-Brosand in May.
The province will compete with teams from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and two teams from Quebec. The teams are competing for the QMJHL Gold Cup May 1-4.
The selection of the male U-16 team began last April with the high performance spring identification camps. From the spring camps, 44 players were selected to attend the provincial summer camp in Gander. From Gander, players were scouted throughout the major midget hockey season.
Evaluations concluded at the year-end major midget tournament in Lewisporte. The players came together in early January to help with the identification process.
The Newfoundland and Labrador team includes Luke House (Corner Brook), Noah Weir (Grand Falls-Windsor), Jonas Foley (Goulds), Matthew Hickey (Outer Cove), Andrew Murphy (Mount Pearl), Adam Nolan (Mount Pearl), Joel Petten (Coley’s Point), Shamus Sloane (Goulds), Max French (Pouch Cove), Blake Fudge (Conception Bay South), Scottie Greene (Bishop’s Falls), Dylan Guy (St. John’s), Pierce Halliday (Mount Pearl), Jared Lush (Gander), Jordan Maher (Gander), David Penney (St. John’s), Tyler Planetta (Goulds), Daniel Rice (St. John’s), Jesse Sutton (Mount Pearl) and Cass Warren (Arnold’s Cove).
Don Roche is the team’s head coach. Trevor Budgell and Kris Abbott are the assistant coaches.
