Murphy confirmed as Memorial's director of varsity athletic

As reported in The Telegram last week, former Memorial Sea-Hawks women’s volleyball coach Karen Murphy is the new athletic director of varsity athletics.
The official announcement was made Wednesday.

Murphy, who starts her new position Tuesday, replaces Michelle Healey, who took a job with the provincial government's recreation and sports division in the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.

Murphy  graduated with a BA from Memorial in 1995 before attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to complete a master of science (kinesiology) degree in 2003.

Murphy also has a doctoral degree in kinesiology, with a specialization in sport psychology, from UNC Greensboro.

She has received several coaching recognition awards, including the Reg Soper Memorial Award from the Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association for dedication and outstanding work in the sport, Memorial University’s  J.D. Eaton Coach of the Year Award with the women’s volleyball coaching staff in 2012-2013 and 3M Atlantic University Athletic Association Female Coach of the Year honours.

Murphy been an assistant to Sea-Hawks women’s volleyball head coach Bill Thistle in recent years, but was once the team’s head coach, guiding MUN to the 1999-2000 Atlantic University championship and an undefeated season. She started coaching Memorial’s women’s team in 1996, recording an overall 63-15 win-loss record.

Since 2011, Murphy has been manager of the Janeway Pediatric Research Unit in the Faculty of Medicine. Before that, she spent three years as a research co-ordinator with the eHealth Research Unit of the Faculty of Medicine.
