A couple of foxes move around the edge of the green on the 18th hole as Mackenzie Clow of Summerside P.E.I., replaces the flag during Monday’s opening round of play at the CN Future Links Atlantic Junior Golf championship at Humber Valley Resort on the province’s west coast. The animals are a common site on the course, often stealing golf balls during players’ rounds. Play in the three-round championship continues today. Players from Newfoundland and Labrador won six championships at the 2014 Outdoor Junior Atlantic Tennis Championships held over the weekend at the Riverdale Tennis Club in St. John’s.

Aiden Drover-Mattinen defeated William Nickerson of Nova Scotia 6-4, 6-1 for the under-12 boys’ singles title.

Olivia Casey beat teammate Jasmine Rahman 6-1, 6-1 for the under-12 girls’ singles crown.

Rogan Betts defeated teammate Drover-Mattinen 4-2, 4-0 fo r the under-10 boys’ singles title.

Drover-Mattinen and Julian Oxner of Nova Scotia defeated Michael Oxner and Fischer Laing of Nova Scotia 6-4, 1-6, 10-6 in the under-14 boys’ doubles division.

Anna Nicolela of Nova Scotia  Ashley Stringer of Newfoundland defeated Niharika Karol of New Brunswick and Isobel Anderson of Nova Scotia 6-3, 6-1 in under-16 girls’ doubles play.

 Casey and Rahman combined to beat Cincy Chen and Rachael Phelan of Prince Edward Island 6-0, 6-1 in the under-12 girls’ doubles division.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

Connelly leads Angels to win

Jill Connelly had three hits in four at-bats to lead Angels to a 7-3 eight-inning win over Dream Kitchens in Coors Light ladies’ softball Monday at Wyatt Park.

Jenna Connelly pitched the win. Amy Corbett suffered the loss.

Heidi Sullivan added a pair of hits for the winners..

Victoria Davis had three hits in four trips to the plate for the losers.

INTERMEDIATE SOFTBALL

C.B.S., Bay Roberts get victories

Lee Cose tossed a five-hitter with nine strikeouts as the C.B.S. Storm edged Lafontaine Club Molson 2-1 in Molson St. John’s intermediate softball Monday night at Lion’s Park.

Losing pitcher Johnny O’Reilly also gave up five hits with nine strikeouts.

Tony Meade had two hits for the winners and Eddie Hefferan had a pair of hits for the losers.

Bay Roberts Coors Light 6, Game On Gear 5

Johnny Doyle had three hits in three at bats to lead Bay Roberts.

Chris Hussey, in relief of Doyle,  pitched the win. Jeremy Hickey took the loss.

Colin Gosse and Stephen Dobbin had two hits each for Game On Gear.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Lewis scores three as Kirby downs Feildians

Connie Lewis scored three goals as Kirby United defeated Feildians 7-2 in Breen’s Jubilee Women’s soccer at Feildian Grounds Sunday.

Kaelyn Bruke added a pair of goals for the winners. Malorie Harris and Jessie Noseworthy each scored once.

Alex Hayward had both goals for Feildians.
