Andrew Bruce of the Blomidon club in Coirner Brook carded the day’s low score to claim the Tely Tour’s Grand Falls Junior Invitational Wednesday at the Grand Falls Golf Club.
Bruce shot a 74 over the par 71 layout, which included a nine on one hole, to finish atop the juvenile boys division two strokes ahead of overall runner-up Michael Simms and three ahead of Grant Lane who finished tied for third overall with junior boys golfer Mitchell McGrath (77).
Angela Earle was the top junior girl on the day, finishing with an 89.
In bantam boys, Joseph Cluney had a 53 and Paige Hickey went to the clubhouse with a 46 in bantam girls action.
The tour continues today with the Gander Junior Open.
Junior Capitals after a fifth straight provincial title
The St. John’s Capitals will try for a fifth consecutive summer as Molson provincial junior baseball champs at Jubilee Field in Corner Brook this weekend.
Looking to dethrone the Caps and claim the A.J. “Ank” Murphy Memorial Trophy are the host Barons, Gander Belfor Pilots, Conception Bay North Bulldogs, and Mount Pearl Blazers.
The Barons and Pilots meet in the tourney opener 3 p.m. Friday, with the title game scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m.
Provincial championship to be decided on the west coast
The Angels will look to defend their crown against four other teams at this weekend’s Softball Newfoundland and Labrador Molson ladies’ fastpitch provincial championship this weekend in Corner Brook.
The other teams competing in the tournament are the Angels’ Coors Light St. John’s Ladies’ Fastpitch League counterparts the Roebothan McKay Marshall Diamonds, along with the KSAB Rangers, Rapid Power Bees and Whelan’s Gate.
Tournament play begins today, with two games at 6 p.m.
Whelan’s Gate meets the Rangers at the Fred Basha Memorial Park in Corner Brook, while the Angels and Diamonds will play at Wyatt Park in St. John’s before leaving for the province’s west coast on Friday.
Semifinals and the final are set for Sunday.
Selects get their first win in league play
Eric Healey (7IP, 2R, 4H, 2W) struck out 12 and Nick PIttman drove in a pair of runs as the Midget Selects collected their first win of the season, beating Bay Roberts Coors Light 8-2 in Molson St. John’s intermediate softball league action Wednesday night.
At Lions Park, Mitch Stack scored once and drove in another on a sac-fly.
Chris Hussey (2IP, 6R, 5H, 1W, 3K) took the loss in relief of starter Johnny Doyle (5IP, 2R, 2W, 11K)
Robbie Brown scored both Bay Roberts runs.

Mike King hit a two-run home run and Justin Hand scored twice for the winners.
Reliever Jeremy Hickey (.2IP, 1K) earned the win. Jordan Noftall (5.2IP, 5R, 8H, 1W, 9K) started and Stephen Dobbin (.2IP, 2R, 3H, 1K) also pitched.
Matt Power (4IP, 1R, 4H, 2W, 1HBP, 4K) took the loss in relief of Trevor Heffernan (2IP, 7R, 4H, 1W, 1HBP, 1K). Blair Myers plated a pair and drove in two more while Andrew Temple and Power his solo home runs.
