Gosse ties Crocker's senior softball pitching win record

Ward Gosse is tied with Ross Crocker for the all-time lead in Molson St. John’s senior softball league wins after collecting his 177th on Thursday night at Lions Park.

Gosse (5IP, 2R, 2H, 1W) struck out nine as the NTV Hitmen defeated the Kelly’s Pub Junior Canadians 17-2. The game was called after five innings on the league’s seven-run mercy rule.

Fergus Griffiths hit a grand slam, Jamie Peddle scored three times and drove in three runs  and Sheldon Keough had two RBI.

Nick Pittman (3IP, 12R, 8H, 10W, 1K) started and took the loss for the Junior Canadians. Eric Healey (2IP, 5R, 4H, 1W, 2K) tossed in relief.

Kelly's Pub Molson Bulldogs 8, The Bigs 4

Sean Cleary (7IP, 4R, 6H, 1W) fanned 14 and Mark Lewis hit a pair of solo home runs for the league-leading Bulldogs.

Donny King (6IP, 6R, 7H, 1W, 2K) took the loss with Mark Power (1IP, 2R, 3H, 1W, 3K) relieving him.

Craig Edmunds hit a two-run double for The Bigs.

Provincial senior women’s tournament underway at KGV

Jane Bard scored all of her team’s goals to lead the Slayers to a 3-1 win over the Blue Thunder in the opening game of the Molson provincial senior ladies soccer championship at King George V Park in St. John’s Thursday evening.

Cassy Young had the lone goal for Blue Thunder.

In Thursday’s other game at KGV, Bowringer downed Paradise/Keyin College 6-1, with Jennifer Gillingham scoring twice for the winners.

Raeleen Baggs, Deanne Costello, Pam Reid and Carthy Woodman had the other goals for Bowringer. jessica Edstrow replied for Paradise.

There are two games today in the six-team tourney as Bull & Barrel takes on Blue Thunder at 6:45 p.m., while Mount Pearl faces Paradise/Keyin College at 8:30 p.m. All games in the tourney, which wraps up Sunday, are at KGV.
