Pearlgate’s Barnes on top of podium twice at Atlantic track and field championships

Chantal Barnes collected a pair of first-place finishes at the Atlantic outdoor track and field championships Beazley Field in Dartmouth, N.S., this past weekend.

The Pearlgate Track and Field Club member, competing in the girls’ 14-15 division, set a new Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association record of 41.98 seconds in the 300-metre run. She followed it up with a first-place showing in the 800m race, clocking a time of 2 minutes and 27.70 seconds.

Barnes wasn’t the only Pearlgate member to finish atop the podium in Dartmouth. Darcy Buckingham turned in a 1:02.79 to win the women’s 20-34 400m event and Nicole Chan was the best 18-19 year old long jumper, clearing a distance of 4.82m.

Bronze for Bonia at Hershey track and field meet

Camryn Bonia won a bronze medal with a time of 2:27.71 in the girls’ 800-metre run for 11-12  at the Hershey’s Track and Field Games In Hersey, Pa. Saturday.

Bonia is from St. John’s and attends Macdonald Drive Junior High.

Other Newfoundland competitors included Levi Moulton (13-14 years), who finished 11th in the 1,600 metres (5:01.02).

Ashley Hutchings (13-14) placed 10th in the 800 metres (2:29.79). Dana Benoit-Chubb (13-14) finished 12th in the softball throw (39.62 metres) and Keno Edwards (11-12) placed seventh (48.77m) in the softball throw.

 

 

 

 

National Rugby Festival begins today in Calgary

The 2014 National Championship Rugby Festival kicks off today in Calgary.

 Thirty-one provincial men’s and women’s rugby teams in the Under 18 and Under 16 age group will be competing for national domination.

In the men’s U16 category, Newfoundland Rock is in Pool 2 facing Alberta, British Columbia (1) and Quebec in the round-robin competition. The Rock plays against Alberta this afternoon in both divisions.

Three teams at national softball championships this week

Newfoundland and Labrador has three teams participating in national softball championships over the next week.

The tournaments include the nine-team event midget boys in Gander.

Team members include Shane Dobbin, Jordan Noftall, Patrick O’Leary, Eric Healey, Simon Power, Mitch Stack, Nick Pittman, Daniel Byrne, Ryan Wall, Liam Kirk, Blake Dalton, Ryan Kenny, Conor McCarthy, Shayne Kavanagh, Rory O’Leary and coaches Randy White and Jeff Kirk.

The 12-team bantam boys’ championship will be decided in Fredericton, N.B.

Team members include Jordan Penny, Andrew Kelly, Jeremy Walsh, Gerald Wall, Brady Ryan, Brent Hatfield, Mark King, Shane Healey, Coady Furey, Brandon Sharpe, Steven Quinlan, Kassidy Chubbs, Tyler Wall, Cody Traverse and coaches Bill Hatfield, Jamie Walsh and Donny King.

The junior men’s event, which includes nine teams, is set for Alberta.

Team members are Lucas Conway, Riley Kenny, Jeff Conway, Brady Lewis, Eric Healey, Philip Corbett, Ed Hefferan, Troy Leonard, Colby Murphy, Nick Pittman, Ryan King, Mike King, Brandon Pomeroy, Joel Whelan, Peter Kavanagh, Tyler Wells, manager Ross Crocker and coaches Stephen Strapp and Paul King.
